  • Identify the physiological changes that happen during and after pregnancy
  • Identify appropriate and safe activities and positions for antenatal exercise
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the pelvic floor muscles and diaphragm for managing intra abdominal pressure during exercise and sport activity
  • Use small equipment (magic circle, swiss ball, resistance band, soft ball) to demonstrate modifications to exercises which will enhance your class’s experience for the ante and postnatal population
  • Understand the role and changes of the pelvic floor muscles during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatally
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the causes of Pelvic Girdle Pain
  • Design an exercise program appropriate for a client with diastasis rectus abdominus
  • Identify the benefits of ante and postnatal Pilates for both the mother and baby
“From the very beginning of pregnancy your body experiences many fascinating changes, all designed to prepare your body for both the carrying of your baby and the eventual delivery. With these changes however, your body will physically adapt and excess pressure can be placed upon certain areas. Some areas can become stretched, strained, weakened and/or overused. These strains generally increase as you progress through the trimesters, so anything you can do from the start to maintain good body posture and strength will hopefully ease aches later on.”

“During the postnatal period the body undergoes a number of changes. Generally speaking, the guidelines for return to exercise are derived from from tissue healing timeframes. It takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks for tissue healing and this is one of the reasons for a 6-week check with a GP. Throw in an array of hormones, sleep deprivation and a shock to the system in terms of life adjustment, and this period of time can vary wildly.”

“There are many myths and misconceptions about what your pelvic floor muscles should be doing during Pilates exercises. Should they be relaxed? Contracted? And does attending a weekly Pilates session count as doing your pelvic floor exercises? Hopefully after reading this you will understand firstly what the pelvic floor muscles are and secondly what their role is in Pilates.”
