FAQs

Why are continuing education requirements for physical therapy necessary?

Like many professions, physical therapists are committed to being a “lifetime learner.” This means actively staying engaged in the study of physical therapy. This helps PTs stay up to date on current trends and changes in healthcare. It also protects the public by ensuring that licensed Physical Therapists remain competent in their field. By completing additional hours of education and professional development, PTs are ensuring they give the best possible care and treatment plans for patients.

What are the continued education requirements for a physical therapist?

Continuing education requirements vary from state to state, with state Board establishing rules for both the type and amount. Common required course topics include state laws regarding ethics, pain management and physical therapy practice. State regulations also determine which CE credits are accepted and which institutions can provide the accredited courses, seminars, workshops or training.

What is the difference between CEs and CEUs?

CE stands for continuing education and a CE credit represents one hour of continuing education.

CEUs are continuing education units that are worth 10 contact hours each. They are often misused and most state boards have worked to eliminate them from usage.

Can I get all of my PT continuing education requirements online?

Since each state sets their own regulations for CE requirements, it is possible that they could all be met online. However, many states do limit the number of hours that can be completed strictly online.

You can find your state’s requirements by click here: State CE Requirements.

How long do I have to complete my online course?

You will have 120 days from the date of enrollment to complete your online course. Live seminars are completed through attendance and any additional requirements will be addressed during the training.

How do I know how many continuing education credits are awarded for each course?

Each course provides a description that will identify the learning objectives, viewing time and state approved CE credits available.

How do I get credit?

You will receive a Certificate of Completion, including number of CE hours awarded, at the completion of the course.  Your certificate will be available for download anytime on your My Account page.
