CASE EXAMPLE:  BILATERAL RADIAL POLYDACTYLY,  TYPE IV

Bahram is only 1 year old.  His hands and thumbs were functional when watching him play.  However, Bahram lives in a country where hand deformities are believed to be caused by evil spirts.  Therefore removal of his thumbs was imperative to keep his family together.

Bahram’s surgery:

The hypoplastic less functional thumbs were removed because the ulnar thumb is the more developed one.

All structures were closely examined and preserved before excising the smaller thumb.

The EPL tendons were reattached to centralize the thumbs.

Two weeks post op Bahram’s stitches were removed and he was already able to play with toys.
