ISHMAL ( red jacket)

Ishmal also has type I, spade hand.  Ishmal underwent interdigital web space releases, however, his mother did not have bandages to keep his fingers separated during the healing process.  His fingers scarred together and now he will require another surgery to improve the function of his hands.  After seeing this we have begun fabricating custom orthoses with digital separations molded into the body of the orthosis.

MITTEN HAND

Type II example of a mitten hand.

This is a more serious deformation since all of the digits are joined, only the thumb is separate.  Notice the mitten appearance of this hand with syndactyly of index, middle, ring and small fingers.  This picture shows concave palm, a characteristic of type II and short thumb. With type II the thumbs are not always free.  Sometimes with mitten hand, the thumb is fused to the index with the distal phalanx not being part of the osseous union and a thumb nail can be seen.
