GEZU (pink jacket)
Gezu has type III, hoof hand.  This is rare and the most serious type of deformation in Apert Syndrome.  Gezu’s x-ray shows that the thumb is turned inwards and all of the digits have a solid osseous or cartilaginous  fusion.   Her fingers have one conjoined broad nail.  Imaging of type III hands are very difficult due to overlap of bones.  Gezu was not a candidate for surgical correction.

Fabrication of a Syndacyly splint with a web spacer

Draw a pattern to form a forearm based intrinsic plus splint (position of safety) ( MCPs 70 – 90 degrees of flexion with IPs straight)

Mold thermoplastic to patient,  forearm based is better for small hands for a more secure fit.  Place MCPs in flexion to keep collateral ligaments from becoming tight.  Select a thermoplastic material with good “sticky” properties.  This will be important when you need to add the syndactyly web spacer.

Secure forearm straps before adding the syndactyly spacer.
